HandledarutbildningÅr 2000 ändrades högskolelagen så att lärosäten med rätten att anordna forskarutbildning blev skyldiga att anordna särskilda utbildningar för handledare för forskarstuderande.
Rådet för högre utbildning tilldelades ett extra anslag på sju miljoner kronor fördelade över tre år för att stödja lärosätena i deras arbete med handledarutbildningar. I en första utlysning år 2001 fördelade Rådet 3,95 mkr till tolv utvecklingsprojekt som drevs av enstaka lärosäten. De flesta av dessa projekt kom igång under höstterminen 2001. En senare utlysning under år 2002 riktades enbart till konsortier av minst tre lärosäten. Då satsade Rådet 4,5 mkr på fem projekt.
Från och med januari 2006 finns rådets projekt tillgängliga via Myndigheten för nätverk och samarbete inom högre utbildning, som också har uppdraget att arbeta med pedagogisk utveckling tillsammans med Sveriges lärosäten.
